April 17th 2022 marks 5 years since my wife & I skipped town to head to Sin City to tie the knot!! To celebrate we decided to spend the weekend in Washington DC! Now… the reason we went to DC was because my wife wanted to visit the Smithsonian Museum of African American History BUT that place has been booked out for MONTHS in advance. Even still, both of us have passed through DC on several occassions but neither of us have actually visited the Capitol so we still wanted to go up there to see what we could get into.
For starters, the drive up there wasn’t bad at all UNTIL we got into Northern VA *facepalm*. We sat in traffic for at least an hour and a half before we got to our hotel. But when we got there we we’re both happy with how nice our room was & how nice the staff was.. we were BOTH dead tired from the ride so we decided to chill in the room & door dash some Philly cheesesteaks from some local sub shop. They were FIRE btw. Saturday we went to a seafood spot called Crafty Crab for lunch & it was incredible! Our waitress was really nice so she got a good tip lol. After that we tried to drive around & visit all the monuments & do tourist stuff but the traffic was SOOOO bad it was ridiculous. We forgot it was a holiday weekend and everyone & their grandma was out doing tourist stuff too *second facepalm*. We even tried to park in a parking garage which was full… but we STILL had to pay $10 for roaming the parking garage trying to find a spot for an hour *THIRD FACEPALM*. So… we accepted defeat and went BACK to our hotel room to get some rest. Later I door dashed some food from a Jamaican spot and it was by far the WORST Caribbean food i’ve ever had in my LIFE!
So… Sunday after we checked out of our hotel we tried to go sightseeing again…definitely wasn’t as busy as it was Saturday so we were able to at least go see the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. It was incredible. Very inspiring. The walls were lined with some of Dr. King’s most famous & meaningful quotes. We tried to go see the White House but all the roads around it were blocked off for some Easter program they had going on, so we went to grab brunch at a soul food restaurant called Ooh’s & Ahh’s. OMG ya’ll. Literally some of the best food I’ve eaten in my entire life. We’re seriously talking about going back to DC just to go eat there again. YES people.. it was THAT damn good!! I had turkey wings with mac & cheese & collard greens and Keshia had chicken & waffles with a side of yams. We also both ordered a strawberry lemonade spiked with Tito’s vodka. It did exactly what it was supposed to do at 1p in the afternoon lol.
Overall, we didn’t get to do a lot of the things we wanted to do but we still had a great time enjoying each others company. I pray that God allows us to see another 5 years or more together & that we’re blessed enough to continue exploring the United States together. I love you, Kesh!
