Last Friday night my beautiful wife & I went downtown New Bern to check out this month’s Art Walk! It was a rainy night but that didn’t stop us from going to the Bank of the Arts where we saw some incredible hand painted & hand drawn art! There we’re some amazing portraits of locals at their places of employment that were done in colored pencil that looked so lifelike! Unfortunately I can’t remember the artists name 🙁 (if anyone DOES know please reach out to me!) But the main reason we came down was because of a good friend Edward Lee Hood!
Get ready for story time folks…lol. So.. back in 2017 my wife took me to Wine & Design here in New Bern for my birthday. That’s where we met Mr Lee and sometimes when you meet people they just leave a lasting impression on you and that’s what happened. That Christmas I actually commissioned him to paint 3 paintings of Beyonce as a gift for my wife (who i’m sure loves Bey more than she loves ME..lol). After that, other than friending each other on social media we lost contact. Well a friend of mine recently sent me a picture of a painting and was like ‘Hey is this you?’… the more i looked at it the more I realized it WAS a picture of me from a URL battle rap event I DJ’d in 2019. Mind…BLOWN. I finally got in contact with Mr. Lee and he told me it would be on display at Art Walk so I HAD to go see it in person! While I was there the first thing I could do was shake his hand and give him a big hug because it had been so long since we saw each other and I was so blown away and appreciative that he took the time to paint me. He told me that he saw the picture on Facebook back in ’19 and was inspired by it, so he decided to challenge himself by giving himself a 2 hour time limit to paint it and he did! To be honest I really could have sat there all night talking to Mr Lee. He’s a creative just like I am and hearing someone speak about they’re love & passion for their craft is always inspiring to me. If you ever get a chance go check out Large Brush Strokes in downtown New Bern, stop in & say hello! He’s a very nice man & extremely talented!
Art Walk is every 2nd Friday of the month on Middle St. in Downtown New Bern. Next month come down and see what type of talent New Bern has been hiding all these years!
